Matt Fairnington, 87, of 750 Second St. W., Fort Frances, Ont., passed away unexpectedly at his home on Saturday, Dec. 5, 2009.

He was born Oct. 30, 1922 in England. He was married to Ada Rodgerson, who predeceased him.

Matt served in World War II, from January, 1942 until December, 1946, in Her Majesty’s Service, the British Army, the 51st R.E.C.C.E. Regiment, in the Middle East, North Africa, Palestine, Italy, and Holland.

He was a prisoner of war from September, 1944 until April, 1945.

Matt was a member in good standing of King Solomon’s Lodge, Br. #43, and the Royal Canadian Legion Br. #29.

He was predeceased by his mother, Hannah Fairnington; his first wife, Ada Fairnington; and daughter-in-law, Dionna Mosbeck.

Matt is survived by his wife, Astrid; son, Murray and wife, Valli; grandsons, Mark (Shannon Ridler) and Brad; and great-granddaughter, Kiera, the “little one” who always brought a smile to his face and a twinkle to his eye.

He also is survived by his stepsons, Ron Mosbeck and wife, Marilyn, and their children, Wayne and Cathe and daughter, Nicki, Kate Vesey and son, Eadum, Tary and Sheila and their children, Natasha and Brianne, and Diana and children, Naiomie, Nathan, and Fontaine, and Dennis Mosbeck and his children, Mandy and Clinton.

At Matt’s request, there will be no funeral service.

Cremation has taken place.

However, the family would like to invite anyone who wishes to pay their respects to join them upstairs at the Royal Canadian Legion on Thursday, Dec. 10, 2009 from 2-4 p.m. to celebrate Matt’s life.

The honourary pallbearers will be Alan Eide, Don Roth, Larry Phillips, Larry Oveson, “Buzz” Wickstrom, John Elyk, and the rest of Matt’s friends.

In lieu of flowers, in memoriam donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the charity of your choice.
