Road win for Lakers
The Fort Frances Lakers became the first team to beat the Minnesota Wilderness at the Northwoods Credit Union Arena in Cloquet, winning 4-3 last night for their third-straight triumph.
Trailing 1-0 late in the first period, Lakers’ forwards Colton Spicer and Jacob Nolan scored in a 23-second span early in the second to take the lead.
The league-leading Wilderness stormed back to tie the game early in the third, but Mason Meyer’s shot eluded Gordie Defiel later into the period to put the Lakers in front for good.
Meyer led the way with a goal and two assists while goalie Jameson Shortreed made 39 saves.
Now sitting just a point behind the Thunder Bay North Stars for second place in the SIJHL standings, the Lakers (7-4-0-1) will look to extend their winning streak Saturday night when they host the Minnesota Iron Rangers in a 7:30 p.m. clash.
In other news, Spicer and Lakers’ defenceman Jon Carlson have been invited to the Canada West selection camp for the World Junior ‘A’ Challenge, which will be held Nov. 5-11 in Yarmouth, N.S.
The Fort Frances natives will be joined by 58 other at the selection camp, which starts Sunday and runs until Wednesday in Calgary.
