Juniors set for gridiron debut

After holding practices for the past month, the Fort Frances junior football team will take to the field for the first time this afternoon against International Falls.
Kick-off is at 5 p.m. at Bronco Stadium.

“The boys are really excited to play, especially with the game being under the lights on a Monday,” noted coach Ken Matthews.
“This is the first game for the 32 kids in Grade 7 and 8 that are on the team here, and they are raring to go against the Falls,” he added.
Today’s scrimmage also will mark a difference from what the local players are used to as they will be playing under American rules as opposed to the Canadian rules they have been learning.
“We’ve had to redevelop our whole playbook for this scrimmage so that we can play the 11-man American game instead of the 12-man Canadian game that we play over here,” Matthews explained.
“So we’ve had a little bit of work to do for the last two weeks.
“But the kids have stepped up and they have grasped the new playbook quickly,” he lauded.
The junior football team currently has two other scrimmages on its schedule.
They’ll be travelling to Dryden this Saturday for a noon contest before hosting the rematch the following Saturday (Oct. 13).
The start time for the game at Fort High also will be at noon.
