Tauno “Tony” Boind, 71, of 1013 Second St. E., Fort Frances, Ont., passed away Thursday, July 31, 1997 at La Verendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances.
He was born July 27, 1926 in Fort Frances to the late Ivar and Maria Boind.
Tony was raised, attended school and had lived his entire life in Fort Frances. In his earlier years, he worked and sailed on the Great Lakes, and Canada Car in Thunder Bay. During World War II, Tony enlisted with the Canadian armed services and was stationed in Canada. Upon his discharge, he returned to the bush to work with his dad.
Upon leaving the logging industry, he began his employment for the Town of Fort Frances, where he worked for 26 years until his retirement in 1991.
Tony was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Br. 29 in Fort Frances. He loved painting in his earlier years, and in later years, socializing with his friends, playing crib, pool, and horseshoes. He also enjoyed gardening, modelling, and jigsaw puzzles for pastime.
On Dec. 30, 1983, Tony was united in marriage to Patricia “Pat” McDiarmid, who predeceased him on March 1, 1985. He also was predeceased by three sisters; one brother; and by one brother-in-law, Bronc DePiero.
Tony is survived by his step-daughter, Teresa and husband, James Dobie, and their children, Andrew and Katherine, all of Fort Frances, Ont.; one sister, Aune DePiero; and one nephew, Jim DePiero and wife, Pat, and their son, Matthew, all of Fort Frances, Ont.
Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 4, 1997 at 10 a.m. at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances. Father Neil Haight O.M.I. officiated, with interment in Riverview Cemetery in Fort Frances. The Royal Canadian Legion Br. 29 Colour Party provided a military tribute during the service.
Friends visited Sunday evening from 7 until 9 p.m. at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances.
Honourary pallbearers were Ed Kivimaki, Pentti Aho, Ray Skirten, Mel Humphrey, Doug Derendorf, and Mike Shelton.
