Several area fires being monitored

Just one fire was reported in the Northwest Region yesterday—a 0.1-hectare blaze in Nipigon District that likely was caused by humans.
Currently classified as “not under control,” this was that district’s 73rd fire of the season.

The Ministry of Natural Resources also is keeping its eyes on existing blazes across the region.
One fire is being monitored on Lac Seul in Sioux Lookout District, as well as two on Lake of the Woods in Kenora District.
These are island fires, and have had signs posted alerting the public to the situation.
Sioux Lookout Fire #105 is being managed under the Lac Seul Conservation Reserve Fire Response Plan to restore and maintain the ecosystem on the island, which is adapted to periodic disturbance by fire.
The two fires in Kenora District, meanwhile, are being managed under the Lake of the Woods Fire Response Plan to restore and maintain the island ecosystems.
Kenora Fire #88 is located south of Tranquil Channel while Fire #89 is located on a small island about 10 km south of Sioux Narrows.
In related news, progress is being reported on fires across the region, with a number of them declared “out” following aerial reconnaissance flights over blazes in the Sioux Lookout, Red Lake, and Nipigon districts, as well as the managed fires in Quetico Provincial Park.
There currently are 52 fires listed as “active” in the Northwest Region, covering an area of 88,370.3 ha in total.
FireRangers from the Thunder Bay Fire Management Headquarters are working on Nipigon Fire #72, a 0.8-ha blaze on the Black Bay Peninsula, about 35 km southwest of Red Rock.
This fire, which was reported on the evening of Aug. 12, required a three-km-long hose lay to bring water into the fire.
But crews report they are making good progress.
Two crews responded Sunday evening while an additional crew travelled in yesterday.
