Local featured at art gallery

Every month, the Fine Line Art Gallery on Mowat Avenue chooses an artist to feature.
Local painter Evelyn Barker was selected for July.

“I’ve been painting since the early ’90s off and on,” she noted. “I’ve used oil, watercolours, and acrylic.
“I’ve done the most with acrylic, but I’m doing more now with watercolours,” Barker added.
“I’m learning, trying to,” she laughed.
“It’s not as easy to fix mistakes with watercolours as it is with acrylic.”
Barker focuses mainly on painting buildings and scenery, in both black-and-white and colour.
“It’s something to do . . . it’s a hobby,” she reasoned.
“I joined the art gallery last year for a place to put the pictures,” Barker joked, noting there are only so many that can be hung at home.
However, she added “a lot are featured at Ember’s Grill and Smokehouse [a restaurant her grandson owns] in Sault Ste. Marie.”
Anyone interested in purchasing her paintings can visit the Fine Line Art Gallery, where they will be on display until the end of July.
“We take turns [being artist of the month], and she’s never done it before because she’s fairly new,” Jean Richards, a member of the Fine Line co-op, said of Barker.
“She’s good with a lot of them [paintings],” Richards added. “She really likes doing black-and-white.”
