New veggie vendor now at market
Thursday, 21 June 2012 - 1:32pm
Regular market customer Linda Hamilton encourages other shoppers to visit the market early. One of her favourite parts of the market is the fresh lettuce and other vegetables, but they sell out fast.
Hamilton is a firm believer in buying local and eating organically.
“It is nice to see [vendors] being successful and making a living,” she remarked.
“I’m glad to see the market thriving again,” she added. “It’s got its mojo back!”
Local MNR employee David May enjoys the convenience of the market. His favourite market item is Homemade in Burriss’ chicken pot pies.
“These pies are the perfect bachelor food. They’re so quick and easy,” May remarked.
“I missed them over the winter!”
“I shop at the market to purchase local fresh food with fewer chemicals in order to protect my family’s health and protect the environment at the same time,” reasoned Ange Petsnick, a dedicated customer and mother of two.
Petsnick also enjoys visiting her neighbours at the market, and getting to know the farmers who grow the food she eats.
“Every week my daughters and I go to the market to purchase Annie’s fresh strawberries and spinach, Cornells’ locally-raised beef, Gerbers’ fresh eggs, elk sticks from Rainy River Elk Company, and Brule Creek flour,” she noted.
Market manager Deb Cornell is pleased with the 2012 season so far.
“I am really happy that the market kitchen has been revitalized this year,” she said. “There has been lots of action going on.
“Chef Ryan [Parisien] is a fabulous cook and I’m thrilled he is using lots of local foods in his menu.
“It is a great way for us to showcase local products,” she stressed.
Cornell also is amazed that every year vendors are bringing fresh produce to the market earlier and earlier.
So far this season, the market has seen asparagus, garden greens, spinach, snow peas, green onions, strawberries, radishes, herbs, rhubarb, and new potatoes.
Check out the great variety at the market and socialize with other frequent customers!
