Truly saddened

Dear Mike:
Re: “In response” letter to the editor from MP John Rafferty (Fort Frances Times, May 2).

I didn’t think I would be writing another “Dear John” letter so soon. In this letter, I would like to clarify the comments made twice by Mr. Rafferty and which, in fact, were incorrect.
I NEVER stated in my original letter that I did not receive Old Age Security benefits. I did say that because of other income, I am guaranteed the basic amount of old age pension of $510.21 a month, or $6,122.52 per year, which I, in fact, get.
I receive that amount because I have other income from a work pension and CPP, and do not qualify for the Guaranteed Income Supplement.
Your statements infer I am independently wealthy and don’t need OAS to make ends meet. I do.
I have worked with distinction with the OPP, the Kenora Town Police, and with the Ontario Ministry of Northern Affairs/Development. I paid into my pension plan and into CPP, and now receive both.
I fully retired after serving two terms on Fort Frances council and put in 41 years to enjoy the fruits of my labour.
If you are going to attack someone personally just because they don’t agree with your viewpoint, we are in sad shape indeed. I don’t think we want to get into the time you personally will have to sit as an MP to earn a pension, how much it will be, and whether you will qualify for OAS when you retire.
Your original column should have been much clearer and your response is full of assumptions about future OAS programs.
I am truly saddened by your approach to dealing with a little criticism. I abhor the personal attack ads employed by any party and any MP or MPP.
Signed,
David M. Bourgeault
