Heartfelt thanks

Dear editor:
I would like to thank the members of the La Vallee Township volunteer firefighters who responded to our call on Saturday, Nov. 5.

A very large hay marsh on the La Vallee River south of our home caught fire and at first we adopted a wait-and-see attitude. But then the wind picked up out of the south, putting our home in the line of the fire.
Growing up, I went through some major fires that were close to where I lived. And then we lived in Pickle Lake, where I saw first-hand what an out-of-control fire, whipped by wind, could do. I watched a fire jump a lake.
We were not about to take a chance with our home and so we called 9-1-1.
The firefighters arrived in amazingly fast time and although there was not much they could do, they took this matter very seriously, which was very comforting for me. They put out the part of the fire they could get to, then brought in a boat to go up the river and be sure it had not jumped to the north side.
Through it all, their communication skills were terrific. I always knew what was going on and not once did they treat this matter lightly. I was so relieved to have them there.
These volunteers probably had better things to be doing on a Saturday afternoon, but they gave their time to do this and they need to know how much I appreciated that.
A big, heartfelt thank you to them.
(Signed),
Donna Latimer
