Salvation Army thanks community
Wednesday, 7 January 2009 - 1:36pm
In the weeks leading up to Christmas, the Salvation Army was busy putting together these food hampers, as well as ringing bells at various locations around the community to raise money.
“We did okay, we can say that,” said Capt. Sandoval, though noting that unfortunately they didn’t meet their initial goal.
But thanks to the support of last-minute donors, expenses for the season were covered, he explained, adding a better distribution of what was donated helped out, as well.
“The bell ringing, it was down probably 30 percent,” noted Capt. Sandoval. “But with the support of the letter that I sent to the community, we made possible the support to those in need.”
The Salvation Army wishes to thank everyone in the community for their donations and help, he stressed.
But while the holidays are now over, Capt. Sandoval would like residents to remember that need has no season. Many families extended themselves too much over the holidays with what little they already had, he noted.
As such, the Salvation Army is still active and in need of donations so it can support people in need throughout the year.
“But it’s impossible to do that without the support of generosity of the community,” he said.
“We still are open for those who want the support,” added Capt. Sandoval. “Our food bank hours are Tuesday and Thursday from 10-12 and 1-3. And for those in emergency situations, they need to call in advance.”
The Salvation Army is located at 316 Victoria Ave., and can be reached by calling 274-3871.

Despite fewer donations than in previous years, the local Salvation Army still managed to help out families in need across the district during the holiday season.
“In total we served 210 hampers to the community, thanks to the help and support of people,” said Capt. Angel Sandoval.
