Higgins appointed as trustee
Tuesday, 2 December 2008 - 5:19pm
Higgins was one of two people who ran for the position, and was appointed over Jason Kabel following a secret ballot vote during a special meeting of the board yesterday evening.
The vacancy arose after Donna Dittaro submitted her letter of resignation at the board’s Nov. 4 meeting.
“I just think that education is important for children more than ever before,” said Higgins, who hopes being involved with setting up policies and procedures will have a positive effect on current and future students.
As a parent with three sons at Robert Moore School, Higgins hopes to bring his unique view to the board, having first became involved during the F.H. Huffman review.
Higgins will represent the Town of Fort Frances and the unincorporated areas east of the town for his term, which runs until Nov. 30, 2010.
Also on the board’s agenda during tonight’s regular monthly meeting is the election of a chair, vice-chair, and Ontario Public School Boards’ Association representative for the term of December, 2008 to November, 2009.
With the financial committee having met on Nov. 25, the public board also will be hearing its report tonight.
Trustees also will be presented with various motions, including one to approve the 2007-08 financial statements as presented, as well as declaring three locations (1050 Walker Ave., 120 acres of vacant land in Miscampbell, and one acre in Carpenter) as surplus and beginning the process to dispose of that land.
Presentations from the public tonight will include Julie Slack on “Healthy Food for Healthy Schools” and Fort Frances OPP Cst. Ann McCoy giving an update from the local diversity committee.
Tonight’s meeting gets underway at 7 p.m. at Robert Moore School. The public is welcome to attend.

“I’m just excited,” said Higgins. “I’m one of those people who believes in becoming involved within our communities and I’m going to give it all my effort that the position deserves.”
