Smoking ban gets nod
Wednesday, 26 November 2008 - 3:34pm
“We’re going to be reminding people over the next week or so that there’s no smoking at the front entrances within nine metres,” Community Services manager George Bell said yesterday.
“If they continue to smoke there, bylaw will be coming down and issuing tickets,” he warned.
Violating the bylaw will result in a fine of up to $1,000.
“We’re not going to go and start writing up $1,000 fines right away. We need to let people know,” explained Bell. “It will be signed accordingly.
“There’s a big sign up there now, and we’ll get more signs up so that people know they’re not allowed to smoke.”

It will prove costly for smokers if they do not step away from the entrances to the Memorial Sports Centre the next time they go out for a puff.
Town council on Monday night voted unanimously in favour of a bylaw to prohibit smoking nine metres from the front overhang at the main entrance as well as the southwest entrance to the Memorial Sports Centre, and that the “no smoking” zone be clearly marked.
“If they continue to smoke there, bylaw will be coming down and issuing tickets,” he warned.
