Plenty of nods for top citizen
Tuesday, 4 November 2008 - 3:20pm
This seems to indicate a greater interest in the honour this year as that number far exceeds the seven nominations turned in both last year and in 2006.
The selection committee, consisting of Bill Gushulak (“Citizen of the Year 2000”), Mark Kowalchuk (“Citizen of the Year 1994”), Mayor Roy Avis, and Coun. Sharon Tibbs, is meeting tomorrow at noon to make their decision, which then will go before council for approval on Monday (Nov. 10).
Gushulak said he was encouraged by flood of responses.
“It just shows there’s obviously a lot of people who wish to acknowledge the many, many hours of volunteerism that take place in this community. That’s a great sign, and we look forward to making that choice on Wednesday,” he remarked.
“We might have to stay for an extended meeting,” Gushulak chuckled.
The award, which is being given out for the 21st time this year, formally will be presented at the town’s annual appreciation dinner on Friday. Nov. 21 at La Place Rendez-Vous.
The identities of the nominees will not be revealed. Only the selection committee’s choice will be publicly announced.
Anyone who has done an outstanding job for the community in any way is eligible for the award. The only stipulation is that the recipient be a resident of the Town of Fort Frances and that the nominee not presently hold elected office.
Dede Mallory was the first “Citizen of the Year” in 1988. Dr. Robert Lidkea won the award last year.
Other past honourees include June Keddie (2006), Patti-Jo Reid (2005), Joyce Gosselin (2004), John Dutton (2003), Jean and Lin Boileau (2002), John McTaggart (2001), Jim Cumming (1999), Walter Horban (1998), Terry Ogden (1997), Gordon McTaggart (1996), Pastor Earl Swanson (1995), Dr. Audrey Johnstone (1993), George Wood (1992), Jean Scheirer (1991), Florence and Woody Gray (1990), and Albert McKelvie (1989).

The “Citizen of the Year” selection committee really will have its work cut out for it this week as a flood of nominations came in before the 4 p.m. deadline on Friday (Oct. 31).
While only five nomination forms had been turned in as of Oct. 24, that number jumped to 18 by the end of the day Friday.
