Mom vows to get kids back

WINNIPEG—She admits to failing her two young daughters miserably by exposing them to all kinds of horrors inside an inner-city crack house.
But a 28-year-old mother is vowing to fight to regain custody after she was given a 15-month conditional sentence yesterday for the rare charge of corrupting children.

“I take full responsibility for my actions. I know it was a horrible place for them to be. I put them in harm’s way,” said the woman, who can’t be named to protect the identity of the victims.
Manitoba Child and Family Services took custody of the children, now aged eight and 10, immediately after the woman’s March, 2006 arrest. She hasn’t seen them since, but had a supervised visit scheduled for this morning.
Following a tip from a drug user who was disturbed by what he’d seen going on inside, police found the two girls, then aged five and eight, sleeping on the floor next to a cat litter box filled with feces. There was no food in the home and no fridge to be found.
Their beds had been broken apart, their mattresses instead used by junkies to shoot up inside the home. Dirt, garbage, and animal feces were scattered throughout the residence, the toilets were clogged, and a bathtub overflowed with dirty water.
