Stephenson captures ladies’ golf tourney

Eadie Stephenson of Winnipeg needed a playoff hole to beat local golfer Carol Livingston by one stroke at the annual ladies tournament Saturday at Kitchen Creek.

Both carded 77 after 18 holes, setting the stage for Stephenson’s victory on the first sudden-death playoff hole. She managed to par the 10th hole while Livingston took a bogey five.

A total of 64 ladies took part in the one-day event.

Livingston, fresh off earning a berth on the Manitoba senior provincial team headed for the nationals in Calgary on Aug. 25-28, took top spot in the championship flight (seven to 18 handicap) with her 77.

Former champ Joan Richardson was two strokes back with a 79, followed by last year’s winner, Sylvia Cochrane (82). Janet Bembeneck (84) and Carole Thorpe (85) rounded out the top five.

Closest to the hole winners included Stephenson (#7) and Julie Lowry (#11) while the straightest drive on No. 17 was won by Johnson.

Nancy Evans and Ceresino were the top putters while Joyce Flatt won the $100 gift certificate from Brockie’s Jewellers with a hole-in-one.
