The Causeway Cougars edged the MEC Bulldogs, also of Fort Frances, 4-3 on Sunday to claim the Silver division title in the annual International Falls Squirt hockey tournament last weekend at Bronco Arena.
Jarod Catholique-Bruyere scored the game-winner, assisted by Shane Belluz, with under a minute to play in regulation time.
The Bulldogs had rallied from a three-goal deficit to tie the score at 3-3 on the strength of a hat trick by Larry Pham.
Causeway earlier had blanked the Falls “white” team 6-0, were shutout 3-0 by Wadena, and then blasted Baudette 18-0.
The Bulldogs, meanwhile, nipped Rainy River 4-3, dropped a 9-1 decision to Thunder Bay, and then dumped Emo 6-1 to advance to the Silver final.
The Gold division final saw the West End Grizzlies (Thunder Bay) edge Wadena 1-0 on a goal with just over a minute to play—and despite being outshot 34-3 during the game.
In other tournament action, the Fort Frances Firemen doubled Gillons’ (also from Fort Frances) 4-2 in the Gold division third-place game.
The Firemen jumped out to a 2-0 lead before Gillons’ tied the score on a pair of goals by Steven Pruys. But David Pierce and Josh Tovey replied for the Firemen to wrap up the win.
Gillons’ earlier had downed Emo 4-2 and the Falls “purple” team, before losing 6-1 to Thunder Bay in the semi-finals.
The Firemen reached the third-place game against Gillons’ by edging the Falls “gold” team 6-5 and Baudette 5-1, then dropping a 7-0 decision to Wadena in the semi-finals.
Meanwhile, the Emo Selects dumped Baudette 4-1 in the Silver division third-place game while the Rainy River Rage knocked off the Falls “gold” team 9-0 in the Bronze division final.
