While far from a student’s favourite way to spend their summer vacation, the Rainy River District School Board is now accepting registration for summer school.
The summer school program, for all students in Grades 7-10, targets math and literacy skills.
Registration forms for this year’s program have been given to students who are felt could benefit from summer school and are to be completed by June 8.
“It offers extra support to students in math and literacy in the intermediate years,” said Terry Ellwood, superintendent of education for the public school board.
The board tries to run its summer school at each end of the district so students in Atikokan and Rainy River also have access.
“The program was well attended in the past. We had up to 60 kids in the region last year at four different locations,” Ellwood noted.
This is the fourth year for the summer school program, which is free for all students. Those who have difficulty in these two core areas can get more one-on-one help from teachers since summer school classes have a ratio of one teacher for every 10 students.
“The ratio of teachers to students is something we would hope to have in the regular school system but just can’t afford with the funding formula,” Ellwood said.
Students spend five hours a day in the classroom for 12 days during the summer. Ellwood said it was up to teachers to schedule the classes but noted many chose to have the kids come four days a week during the month of July.
Ellwood said summer school is particularly helpful for students entering high school.
“There are several very important curriculum initiatives that they have to face when they get to Grade 9,” he remarked. “One is the transition from Grade 8 to Grade 9 at a new school and working under the credit system for the first time.”
But he warned anyone who signs up for summer school must attend all classes.
“Attendance is mandatory,” Ellwood stressed. “Our funding depends on student enrolment so if you sign up for the course, you have to stay committed.”
