Only two new fires were confirmed in the Northwest Region over the weekend.
At last report, Kenora Fire #89 was listed as “being observed” at 0.2. hectares while Nipigon Fire #72 was classified as “not under control” at 0.8 ha.
Both of these blazes were reported yesterday.
Meanwhile, all the fires that were being monitored in Quetico Provincial Park have now been declared “out.”
There currently are no active fires in Fort Frances District.
The forest fire hazard remains “moderate” across most of Northwestern Ontario. There are pockets of “high” hazard, however, including more eastern areas such as the north shore of Lake Nipigon, as well as Armstrong, Geraldton, Ogoki, and Longlac.
Northern reconnaissance flights were conducted over the weekend, with numerous fires in the far north of Sioux Lookout District being called “out.”
Fires in the far north portions of Nipigon District have been re-mapped, with some exhibiting very little signs of life.
There are a total of 52 active fires in the region, with Red Lake District being the hot spot with 23.
The others are in Kenora District (two), Thunder Bay District (one), Nipigon District (12), and Sioux Lookout District (14).
There have been 508 fires to date this season.
