TORONTO–Ontario NDP leader Andrea Horwath and Aboriginal Affairs critic Sarah Campbell, MPP for Kenora-Rainy River, last week issued the following statement on the re-election of Shawn Atleo as national chief of the Assembly of First Nations (AFN):
“We extend our sincere congratulations to Chief Atleo. Alongside our caucus, we look forward to working with him as we navigate the many opportunities and challenges that face First Nations across Ontario.
“As always, the Ontario NDP caucus remains committed to fighting for real consultation with First Nations as we develop Ontario’s natural resources, as well as maximizing training and employment opportunities for First Nations in resource development.
“We recognize that First Nations have a vital role to play in the future of Ontario’s economy.
“We remain committed to working with the AFN and other First Nations’ leaders to address serious crises facing many First Nations’ communities, including access to housing, education, safe drinking water, and important health care resources.
“Chief Atleo’s leadership in these matters has been appreciated in the course of his last term, and we look forward to maintaining a positive, co-operative relationship with him in his second term.”
