Indian Affairs and Northern Development minister Robert Nault said he thinks an announcement on the new Canada Customs facility at Fort Frances is “very close.”
But when pressed, the Kenora-Rainy River MP wouldn’t guess just when that might be.
“We have been spending a lot of time on making this customs facility a reality,” Nault said Monday.
“We’ve worked closely with the town, Revenue Canada and the private sector, and we all feel its a doable project,” he added. “There’s only a few issues to settle, such a financing, and after they’re settled, we hope to be able to get that thing built
“It’s very important to the area,” he stressed.
Meanwhile, Nault said his department has been working on restructuring initiatives to further promote First Nations economies.
“We haven’t been as successful as we’d like to be in creating First Nations employment,” he admitted.
“Right now, we’re developing programs to make available to try and change that, and we’re looking to make some announcements there soon,” he said.
