Lee rink advances to all-Ontarios

The road to the all-Ontarios took a little bump along the way but the Rainy River Owls, skipped by Angela Lee, advanced to the provincial girls’ curling showdown April 14-17 in Toronto.

Competing at the NWOSSAA playdowns here in Fort Frances, the Owls had little trouble beating Marathon 10-2 in the first-place tie-breaker last night.

Jackson repeats as men’s bonspiel champ

Considering the talent at the men’s bonspiel here each year, Lorne Jackson would be the first to admit it how tough it is to repeat as champion.

But that’s exactly what Jackson and his rink of brother, Derek, and new front end Randy Genyk and Lionel Conan (both from Winnipeg), did at the 51st-annual affair last week, breezing through the 48-team field with an undefeated record.

Canadians ousted in branch playdowns

Heading into their first-ever playoff series, Dave Allison, head coach of the Fort Frances Canadians Midget ‘AA’ squad, felt getting out to a fast start was the key to success at the branch playdowns last weekend in Atikokan.

The Canadians certainly did get out to that all-important quick start against Fort William, grabbing early leads both Friday night and Saturday afternoon.
