Third-straight win for CJ

Ian Jodoin scored twice in the second half to pace CJ Contracting to a 5-0 romp over Manitou Forest Products in Borderland Soccer League men's division action last night at the St. Francis Sports Field.

It was the third-straight win for first-place CJ (5-2).

Lakers' top scorer back

It's tough when any hockey team loses its leading scorer.

Fortunately for the Fort Frances Lakers, that won't be the case next season.

Lakers' head coach and general manager Wayne Strachan last week announced that forward Nick Lucas will be returning to the squad for another campaign.

Desaulniers brightest of all-stars

John Desaulniers shone brightly during the Rainy River District Fastball League's annual all-star game held Thursday night in Pinewood.

Desaulniers was solid on the rubber and also belted a grand slam to left field to pace the East All-Stars to a 11-1 rout of the West All-Stars.

Don Smith also went yard for the East.

Jeff Morrison was tagged with the loss.

Carlson earns accolade

The accolades keep on coming for Molly Carlson.

The Fort Frances native was among 15 Florida State Seminoles' swimmers and divers named to the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Scholar All-America teams last Wednesday.

Local drivers fare well

The Borderland Racing Association didn't host races at the Emo Speedway over the Canada Day weekend, allowing drivers to compete south of the border.

Wyatt Boyum of International Falls placed third in the Midwest Modifieds feature at Greenbush on Saturday.

Cody Ossachuk of Fort Frances came fifth while Dayton Brady of Devlin finished eighth.

Tug-of-war injuries mar festival

An unfortunate mishap forced organizers to cut short the seventh-annual International Boundary Waters Dragon Boat Festival on Saturday afternoon.

Several people were injured on this side of the border during the Backus Community Center's “community pull” tug-of-war between Fort Frances and International Falls, which ran in conjunction with the festival.

Lady Raiders storm back to win

Getting down early proved not to be too much of a challenge for the Couchiching Lady Raiders in Rainy River District Women's Fastball League action Monday night.

The Lady Raiders (7-5) rallied from a four-run first-inning deficit to nab an 11-7 win over the Fort Frances Angels (2-9).

Jennifer Singleton earned the win while Rylee Redford suffered the loss.

Dragon boat festival set to go

The seventh-annual International Boundary Waters Dragon Boat Festival is set to hit the water here on Saturday at the Sorting Gap Marina.

Unlike previous years, a new twist will have the boats being launched from both Fort Frances and International Falls.

Each side also will stage their own festival, with the money raised to go to charities in their respective communities.
