Katie Sinclair saw the rest of her team having fun so she decided to join in.
The Fort Frances native had a goal and two assists in the third period to help the Lakehead Thunderwolves rout the Aquinas College Saints 10-0 yesterday in their opening game at the ACHA Division 2 national women's hockey championship in Columbus, Ohio.
Lakehead U., the top-ranked team from the West region at the tournament, only led 1-0 after the first period.
But the Thunderwolves took control with a five-goal second period, then added four more in the third.
Sinclair got assists 40 seconds apart on goals by Melissa Plug and the fifth tally of the game by Michelle Carlson to make it 9-0.
Then the former Muskie capped the scoring with her marker at 15:27.
Megan Joseph Seeley only had to make 18 saves to earn the shutout.
The Thunderwolves, meanwhile, fired 65 shots on the Saints' net, including 45 in the first half of the game to go up 4-0 and chase starter Holly Ensley halfway through the second in favour of backup Caitlin Miller.
Lakehead U. next faces the Navy Midshipmen, the East region's fourth seed, today at 5 p.m. (all times CDT).
With a win, the Thunderwolves can clinch Pool 'A' and advance to tomorrow's semi-finals at 11 a.m. against the winner of Pool 'B.'
Pool 'B' will be decided today when the Northern Michigan University Wildcats, seeded second in the West, take on the East's third-ranked University of Delaware Blue Hens in a battle of unbeaten teams.
The final is set for Sunday at 11 a.m.
As of press time, there was no indication on www.achahockey.com whether the semi-finals or final would be streamed online, as they have been the last two years.
