Voyageurs' skid hits seven games

The tough times unfortunately continued for the Rainy River Community College Voyageurs women's volleyball team last week.

The Voyageurs, which includes former Muskies Hailee Barnard and Alex Spuzak, dropped their seventh straight match with a 3-0 decision to the host Central Lakes Raiders last Tuesday.

The set scores were 25-11, 25-6, and 25-13, with Barnard registering two kills and three digs in the loss.

RRCC (3-18) was slated to resume action last night against the host Vermilion CC Ironwomen (3-9), with the outcome not known as of press time.

Then they'll conclude the regular season on Friday on the road against the winless Fond du Lac Thunder (0-13).

The Kenora 'AAA' Midget Thistles lost both of their games over the weekend to see their record fall to 0-7 on the young season in the Manitoba league.

The squad, which includes former Muskies Matt Spence and Cole Magill, were dealt a 7-1 setback by the Brandon Wheat Kings on Saturday before being routed 11-2 on Sunday by the Eastman Selects.

Spence tallied the Thistles' only goal versus the Wheat Kings, which also opened the scoring, while Magill was held off the scoresheet in both contests.

Kenora will resume action this Saturday when its hosts the Winnipeg Wild (9-0) at 1:30 p.m. at Thistle Arena.

The squad then will wrap the week up the following afternoon when they take on the host Selects (3-3).

Molly Carlson was named the female Diver of the Week in the ACC for last week.

Carlson, a senior at Florida State University who originally is from in Fort Frances, helped the Seminoles' women's swimming and diving team (1-2, 0-2 ACC) nab their first win of the season in their second straight upset over the 18th-ranked Golden Gophers by a score of 186.5-111.5 on Saturday.

Florida State was dominant on the boards, finishing in first and second place in all four diving events.

Senior Ayla Bonniwell scored a total of 299.40 to win the 1-metre ahead of Carlson (278.40).

But Carlson was the winner on 3-metre with a total of 326.10 while Bonniwell followed in second (303.60).

The Seminoles next will be in action when they travel to Atlanta, Ga. to face Georgia Tech on Saturday.
