Team Ont. into semis

Category:

Two more wins will mean one gold medal.

Team Ontario, with Fort Frances resident Amy Wilson-Hands on board as an apprentice coach, brushed past Saskatchewan 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-17) in the quarterfinals of the female indoor volleyball competition at the Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg yesterday.

The squad has lost not only its first set of the tournament, but its first match as well against Alberta in a 3-1 defeat (20-25, 25-21, 25-18, 25-19) earlier in the day to end Pool 'B' action in second place at 4-1.

But with a national T.V. audience getting to tune in to the match on TSN, Ontario squeaked out the first set against the contingent from the flatlands before growing stronger as the contest progressed.

That sets up a semifinal date tonight at 8 p.m. Central time against the top team from Pool 'A' in the form of Manitoba, who also went 4-1 in pool play.

The winner of that match plays the winner between Alberta and New Brunswick that comprises tomorrow's other semifinal.

The gold-medal final is set to go tomorrow at 5 p.m., while the bronze-medal match between the two semifinal victims will take place at noon.
