Senior spikers caught in a tailspin

Category:

It's been some tough sledding of late for the Muskie senior boys' volleyball team.

After picking up their lone win of the NorWOSSA season back on Sept. 24 against the visiting Sioux Lookout Warriors, the Muskies have now dropped four straight matches to sit with a disappointing 1-5 record in league play.

The black-and-gold were on the wrong side of the scoresheet once again last Wednesday as the visiting Dryden Eagles handed them a 2-1 defeat.

“We aren't where I was hoping we would be at this point in the season,” conceded Muskie coach John Gibson.

“There is a ton of talent and we have a deep team, but I'm struggling to get them to perform at the level they are capable of playing.”

After winning a back-and-forth first set by a 25-23 margin against the Eagles (4-2), the Muskies dropped the remaining two sets by scores of 25-11 and 25-23 to lose the match.

Gibson felt his squad came out very flat to start the second set and once the Muskies lost their momentum, they couldn't find the resolve needed to snap themselves of their funk.

“I was really disappointed in our performance,” he remarked.

“We had some great attacks—but they were too few and far between.”

Fort High was slated to resume NorWOSSA action this afternoon against the host Kenora Broncos (5-0), with the set scores unavailable at press time.

Gibson said that the Muskies would be working on improving their court coverage and speeding up the offence, before then trying to improve their passing and defence, in the practices leading up to today.

“Next week will be a good test in Kenora to see if we can string two solid sets together,” he said last Wednesday.

“The we go to Thunder Bay for a tournament, which will give us the game time we need to get more comfortable with a faster offence.”

The Muskies' next home game is slated for next Wednesday (Oct. 23) when they welcome the Eagles once again to the “Fish Tank.”
