In a game between the top two offensive teams in the Fort Frances Men's Basketball League, with each having one of the top two offensive players, this time it was Sam Soderman and his RRFN team that came out on top in a 78-61 victory over Sunset Landscaping on Tuesday night.
Down only four point at halftime, Sunset could not find a way to shut down Soderman in the second half.
He ended the night with a league season-high 54 points, which included scoring 28 of RRFN's 32 first-half points.
Josh Mastin had 31 points to lead Sunset.
In what could be described as the battle between “young and fast" and "old and big,” it was Arctic Cat's young guns who led the way to a 68-43 victory over BDO in the night's second game.
It was the first time this season that a game featured a 4-on-4 format, since both teams were down a man.
Jeff Nelson “coached” and played, putting up 18 points while being a huge force on the boards.
Joey Angus, meanwhile, used his speed to put up 21 points—many coming on the fast break.
D.J. Mackintosh had a season-high 16 points and played an aggressive game while Todd Richards led BDO with 18 points.
Going in knowing Soderman was on a hot streak, Revco did what they could to slow him down in the night's third game—and hoped fatigue would be a factor.
Unfortunately for Revco, it wasn't.
While Soderman scored “only” 35 points, the added help from Rob McGinnis' 20 points, as well as good contributions from their three other teammates, saw RRFN cruise to an 80-53 victory.
The game actually was tied at 25-25 at one point but Revco's outside shooting and inside driving failed to click going into the second half.
John Sivonen led Revco with 19 points, including three from beyond the arc.
Cole Kowalski started hot with 11 points in the first half, but only added three in the second before fouling out.
There is no basketball next week due to March Break, with league action resuming March 21.
