RBC Lions win battle of unbeatens

Tuesday night featured a battle of old versus young, as well as a pair of undefeated juggernauts facing off in Fort Frances Men's Basketball League action.

The first game of the evening had the Revco Renegades taking on the Muskie senior boys' team.

In the end, it was the mature, crafty, and slick passing veterans of Revco who held on to beat the young-running Muskies 63-55.

Brad Wardas had a team-high 22 points while Dave Petsnick added 12 points off rebounds and some nice inside shooting.

Austin Brown had the hot hand from beyond-the-arc for the black-and-gold, sinking four “treys” that included three-straight baskets in the first half.

He finished with 12 points, while Aaron Bujold led the Muskies with 17.

The second game saw a battle of the unbeatens, with Sunset Landscaping taking on the RBC Lions.

When the two highest-scoring teams in the league face off against each other, the last thing you expect is a low-scoring game.

But that's exactly what happened as RBC (sporting their new blue jerseys) and Sunset Landscaping both played incredibly tight defence while also struggling offensively.

They produced a measly total of 22 points in the first 10 minutes of the game combined before RBC eventually rallied to a 47-43 victory.

Sunset Landscaping took a 26-18 lead into halftime even though they didn't drop a three-pointer until Cody Johnson got his first of eight points in a row at the 15-minute mark.

The second half saw RBC begin to make a move behind some nice drives by Sam Soderman (he even scored a basket while falling to the floor) and some good rebounding by D.J. Mackintosh.

RBC evened the score at 41-41 with 2:27 to go, then added two more baskets and three free-throws to complete the comeback.

Johnson finished with 15 points while normally high-scoring Josh Mastin managed just 12 points for Sunset Landscaping.

Soderman wound up with a game-high 26 for RBC.

The final game of the night saw Arctic Cat facing the BDO Ballerz.

Having lost their previous three games, Arctic Cat was hungry to get their first win of the season.

Still, they found themselves down 30-29 at the half due mostly to the slick shooting of Michael Vanderaa, who scored 16 of BDO's first-half points.

But with Jake McIntosh's five “treys” on the night, Arctic Cat pulled off a 53-46 upset to nab their first win of the season.

Unfortunately for BDO, Vanderaa cooled off substantially in the second half, adding just five more points.

Morgan Anderson had a hot first half for Arctic Cat, draining mid-range jumpers at will en route to scoring 14 of his team-leading 20 points of the night.

Four weeks into the season, RBC leads the way with a perfect 4-0 record.

Sunset Landscaping is right behind at 3-1 while Revco sits at 2-2.

BDO, the Muskies, and Arctic Cat all are at 1-3.

The league runs each Tuesday starting at 6:40 p.m. at Fort High.
