Pair selected for 'Gold Cup' tourney

One's a player and one's a coach—but both are thrilled.

Forward Cooper Witherspoon of Fort Frances was chosen as one of the 20 players who will make up Team Hockey Northwestern Ontario at the 2017 OHL Gold Cup on May 4-7 in Kitchener.

Witherspoon had 14 points in 20 regular-season games with the Thunder Bay Minor Midget 'AAA' Kings of the North American Prospects Hockey League.

He is one of eight players from the Kings' squad to earn a spot on Team HNO.

The previous season, Witherspoon's two goals were a huge part of the Muskies' victory in the OFSAA final that gave Fort High its fourth provincial title.

Joining Witherspoon on Team HNO in an assistant coaching role will be Emo native Luke Judson.

The former four-year star for the OHL's Belleville Bulls will be one of two assistants aiding head coach Jeff Ricciardi from the Thunder Bay KC Sabres.

Judson was on the coaching staff of the NWO Stars' regional PeeWee 'AAA' squad this season.

Team HNO will be in Group 'A' at the Gold Cup along with Team Greater Toronto Hockey League Blue, Team Hockey Eastern Ontario, and Team Ontario Minor Hockey Association White.

Group 'B' will feature Team ALLIANCE, Team GTHL Red, Team Northern Ontario Hockey Association, and Team OMHA Black.
