When a team has first-year players producing like veterans, it’s a winning formula.
Rookies ruled the day for the Muskie boys’ hockey team last night in Kenora as the NorWOSSA leaders improved to 8-0 with a 9-0 romp over the St. Thomas Aquinas Saints.
Cooper Witherspoon led the way with a hat trick while fellow freshmen Nick Hahkala (two) and Jake Clendenning also bulged the twine, along with veterans Sully Shortreed, Sam Tibbs, and Chase McGuire.
“We seem to be getting everybody chipping in,” noted Muskie head coach Jamie Davis, whose squad continues to run roughshod over its NorWOSSA foes—having outscored them 73-8 so far this season.
“That’s good news for us.”
Dylan Ossachuk earned the shutout.
Forward Ethan Carlson-Jourdain picked up two assists in his Muskie debut after being called up from the Fort Frances Bantam ‘AA’ Canadians with forwards Matt Cheetham and Jon Busch sidelined for last night’s game with illness.
“Ethan didn’t look out of place and played pretty decently considering he got called on Tuesday night at 10 p.m. to play for us and didn’t even get a chance to practice with us,” noted Davis.
“He jumped right into the fire and did well.”
The Muskies next will head to Winnipeg for a pair of exhibition games against the St. Paul’s Crusaders #1 and #2 teams tomorrow and Saturday, respectively.
“They’re both at the top of their divisions in their league so we’ll have to bring our A-game,” warned Davis.
