Muskie squads shut out Broncos

You couldn't have drawn up a better start to the year.

Both the Muskie girls' and boys' hockey teams came away with shutout wins over the host Kenora Broncos in their NorWOSSA regular season-openers on Tuesday.

The girls' squad rolled to a 3-0 decision while the boys routed the Broncos by a 13-0 count.

In the girls' game on Tuesday afternoon, Issy Taylor opened the scoring early in the first period as she chipped the puck from in close over the glove of the Broncos' goalie.

Paiten Kinnear fooled the goalie with a long-range shot she fired from near the left point later in the frame to extend it to 2-0 after 20 minutes.

Ashlyn Beck then rounded out the scoring in the second period as she backhanded home a rebound in the slot.

Jersey Masson turned aside all the shots she faced to earn the shutout between the pipes.

As for the boys' squad, they scored early and often as they cruised to victory over the Broncos that evening.

Kaden Kocuiba opened the scoring for the black-and-gold early in the first as he was the recipient of a crisp pass from the point down into the slot, where he made no mistake in a firing a wrist shot home.

Jace Jackson (power play), Connor Nelson, Brady Bodnarchuk, and Nolan Mann then all lit the lamp to stake the Muskies to a commanding 5-0 lead after 20 minutes.

In the second, Kocuiba held onto the puck on a 2-on-1 shorthanded opportunity and made no mistake with a shot upstairs to push it to a six-goal cushion with his second of the night.

Bodnarchuk then also buried his second of the game shortly after to spell the end of the night for the Broncos' starting goalie.

His counterpart didn't fare much better as Peyton Avis (power play) and Mikel Ward also bulged the twine later in the frame to extend it to 9-0 after 40 minutes.

Josh Ward, Avis (shorthanded), Jackson, and Jace Dittaro then all tallied in the third to round out the scoring.

Muskie goalie Darian Klem—although not tested very often—was solid when called upon to nab the shutout in goal.

The boys' squad next will be in action this weekend when they head to Dryden for the Eagles' home tournament on Saturday and Sunday.

Both Muskie teams then will resume NorWOSSA action on Tuesday (Nov. 19) when they host the Eagles in their home-openers.

The girls' game is slated for 7 p.m. at the '52 Canadians Arena while the boys' will go at 7:15 p.m. at the Ice For Kids Arena.
