Muskie girls win in OT

Category:

Jill Calder scored the winner with 17.7 seconds left in overtime to lift a determined Muskie girls' hockey team to a 4-3 win over the host Saint Thomas Aquinas Saints in Kenora on Tuesday afternoon in the opener of the best-of-three NorWOSSA semi-final.

The third-seeded Muskies had lost all previous six meetings against the second-place Saints this season, but used a two-goal effort from Kathryn Fischer to exact some revenge on the road.

Fischer opened the scoring for the Muskies 9:25 into the first period on a man advantage when she finished off a feed from Alex Gartzke for her first of the afternoon.

Kianna Antonick then doubled the lead with 5:07 to go in the second when she capitalized on a fortuitous bounce and beat Saints' goalie Sarah From.

But Rebecca Machura tallied less than two minutes later for the Saints with an unassisted effort to trim it to 2-1 after 40 minutes.

Chelsea Henderson drew St. Thomas Aquinas level 1:29 into the third when she took a pass from Mariah White before snapping it through the legs of Muskie goalie Jersey Masson to knot it at 2-2.

Chloe Skead then gave the hosts their first lead of the game with 8:20 left when she roofed a shot bar-down on Masson.

But with another loss to the Saints staring them squarely in the face, Fischer buried her second of the afternoon to knot it at 3-3 with 6:15 to go to force overtime.

Calder then made good on an unassisted effort with time winding down in the extra frame to give the black-and-gold the win.

Masson earned the win while From was saddled with the loss.

Game 2 is set for today at 7:15 p.m. at the Ice For Kids Arena.

Game 3 (if necessary) would be played back in Kenora on Saturday.
