Muskie girls 'sweep' to first place

Category:

Home ice suits the Muskie girls' curling rink just fine.

The squad—comprised of Ashley Payne, Andrea Schram, Jillian Cousineau, and Katrina Slomke—went 4-0 en route to finishing atop their division at the NorWOSSA qualifier held Sunday and Monday at the Fort Frances Curling Club.

After beating the St. Thomas Aquinas Saints (Kenora) and Sioux Lookout Warriors on Sunday, the Muskies then edged the Red Lake Rams 7-6 on Monday morning before capping play with a 9-5 win over the Rainy River Owls that afternoon.

“The team played well overall,” said coach Kim Beaudry, who also is a co-coach for the Muskies' mixed team.

“Staying focused and getting used to new team lineups was a challenge,” she admitted.

The Owls finished second on the girls' side with a 3-1 record, which included wins over the Warriors, Rams, and Saints before losing to the Muskies on Monday afternoon.

On the boys' side, the Owls nabbed top spot in finishing 4-0.

That included wins over the Atikokan Voyageurs and Muskies on Sunday before drubbing the Whitefish Bay Winterhawks 10-2 and downing the Rams 6-2 on Monday.

The Muskies, Rams, and Voyageurs all finished with identical 2-2 records.

The Muskie rink is comprised of Owen Riches, Jordon Bazylewski, Brett Schram, Kian McEvoy, and Ben Olson.

In the mixed division, Atikokan earned top honours with a 3-1 record.

The Muskie squad, made up of Daffni Chabot, Lauren Penney, Anna Peters, Jesse Thomson, and Brayden Sabbe, finished in second place at 2-1-1.

Up next for the Muskies and Owls are the NorWOSSA finals, which will be held here Feb. 10-11.

“We will be looking at our playing stats and working on fine-tuning any areas of concern,” Beaudry said about the three Muskie rinks' preparation.
