Muskie girls' soccer squad pumped for upcoming season

Category:

Much like their male counterparts, the Muskie girls' soccer team has had a slower start in preparing for the upcoming season due to Old Man Winter lingering a little longer than wanted.

But that's done little to quash the excitement for the black-and-gold.

“I want everyone to have fun out there,” Muskie head coach Sara Roach said about her expectations for the campaign.

"The girls are all getting along really well, and it's really good to see the senior players taking the younger players under their wings and showing them the ropes.

“I think that's what being on a team is all about and I'm really excited for the upcoming season,” she enthused.

Due to the soccer pitch not being usable just yet, Roach said they've had to hold all of their practices inside the gym at Fort High.

“The weather has been an issue," she conceded. ”We have been limited to using the small and large gyms, as well as the hallways in the school.

“It is difficult during the try-out phase of the season, due to the limited space and having so many girls trying out, but we are making the best out the situation,” she added.

Roach also said the squad has been working on various skills during the practices so they are ready when game-time comes.

“We are still in the try-out phase of the season but I'm hoping to have the final team for [today],” she noted.

“We have been working a lot with the players on conditioning, as well as passing, receiving, and positional layout.”

The Muskies will first see game action at an exhibition tournament set for May 4-5 in Winnipeg.

What will Roach be looking for from her players at the tournament?

“I'm hoping to see what everyone is capable of doing, trying players in positions they may or may not be used to, and seeing where they will be utilized best during league play,” she remarked.

“Tournaments are excellent for that very reason as everyone will get lots of playing time, and we will be playing teams outside of our regular league teams.”

Both the Muskie girls' and boys' squads will open the NorWOSSA regular season with games against Kenora and Dryden here on Wednesday, May 9.
