Muskie boys open tourney with a tie

The Muskie boys' hockey team opened the annual Ralph Engelstad Classic in Thief River Falls, Mn. yesterday with a hard-fought 2-2 tie against the Fargo North Spartans.

Fargo North opened the scoring with 6:43 to go in the first period.

Cole Allan gave the Muskies some life when he tied it at 1-1 with 2:38 left in the frame

Eric Pitkanen then put the black-and-gold up 2-1 with 24.2 seconds left.

But the Spartans knotted it at 2-2 with 3:10 left in the second period.

Despite having multiple power-play chances, the Spartans couldn't find a way to get the winner past goalie Darian Klem in the final frame.

The Muskies were back in action this afternoon against the Chippewa Falls Cardinals (Wisconsin).

Then they'll close out play tomorrow at 3 p.m. versus the host squad.

In girls' action, meanwhile, the black-and-gold faced off last night in its second game of the Hockeytown Holiday Classic in Warroad, Mn. against the Dodge County Wildcats.

The Muskies were held to less than 10 shots for the second-straight game as they fell 7-1.

Captain Annalise ('CC') Hayes scored the lone goal for the black-and-gold, who were outshot 26-7.

The Muskies closed out the tournament at noon today against the Minot Majettes (North Dakota).
