Muskie 'birders' strong in tune-up for season

Category:

If last week is any indication, the Muskie badminton contingent will be a force to be reckoned with this season.

The black-and-gold put on some impressive performances at an exhibition tournament in Atikokan last Wednesday.

Being that it was exhibition, teams only played a single match to 21 points.

Senior Muskie standout Aaron Bujold went a perfect 5-0 in boys' singles play, which was comprised of two pools.

Dakota Jernberg and Chad Westover, meanwhile, were 4-3 in senior boys' doubles.

Bella Ward went 6-0 in the junior girls' singles division while Angie Redford was 2-4 in her matches.

Mykaela Putzer also was 6-0 in senior girls' singles while Andrea Schram compiled a 2-4 record.

The duo of Lauren Marchant and Tayah Badiuk, meanwhile, won all five of their matches in the senior girls' doubles division.

Sam Berg and Mykenzie Borger compiled a 3-2 record while Cassidy McKinnon and Emma Cole were 2-4.

Rylee Booth and Owen Riches put together a 6-1 outing in junior boys' doubles.

Gavin Morriseau was 3-3 in boys' singles while Susan and Louise Andy compiled a 2-6 record in girls' doubles.

“The new players showed lots of promise,” noted Muskie coach Brian Church.

“But they ran into some tougher, experienced competition.”

The Muskies next will be in action at a NorWOSSA qualifying tournament tomorrow in Dryden.

The NorWOSSA championships will be held April 18 in Sioux Lookout, with the NWOSSAA championships set for April 25 in Thunder Bay.

OFSAA is slated for May 3-5 in Windsor.
