Local runner in Lakehead

Local runner Priscilla Miller aced her age division at the annual June Classic 5K in Thunder Bay over the weekend.

Of the 43 female racers, Miller finished second overall, clocking in at 19:33:60 in the chip-timed event.

Miller averaged 6:18 per mile while passing most of the men who also were competing.

She is primary level school teacher, specially trained in kindergarten, for the Rainy River District School Board.

The Borderland Racing Association cancelled its races Saturday night at the Emo Speedway due to rain.

Poor weather also impacted racing elsewhere in Minnesota, limiting the action for local drivers who compete south of the border.

Wyatt Boyum of International Falls was at Bemidji Speedway on Sunday but failed to finish the modified feature to wind up in 12th place.

Jeff Davis of Devlin competed at the I-94 Speedway in Fergus Falls on Friday, where he nabbed a 12th-place finish in the Modified feature.

The District 1A Senior Games kicked off here yesterday, with more events happening today.

The games, held every two years, focus on promoting an active lifestyle in an atmosphere of fun, fellowship, and friendly competition.

It is open to residents of the Kenora, Dryden, and Rainy River Districts who are age 55+ as of Dec. 31, 2018.

The games are designed for all to take part in regardless of skill level.

Events scheduled for yesterday included carpet bowling, five-pin bowling, tennis, pickleball, and billiards, along with Cribbage and Euchre.

Those on tap today included floor and table shuffleboard, horseshoes, golf, darts, Bid Euchre, Smear, and Contract Bridge.

Participants were to receive a registration package, which included name tags, participant information, and luncheon and banquet tickets, as well as a well-stocked “goodie bag.”
