They were remembering drivers who paved the way before them, but it also was a memorable weekend for local drivers at the Emo Speedway.
Tanner Williamson (Fort Frances), Raice Westover (Fort Frances), and Brody Strachan (Emo) claimed the overall points total for the weekend in their respective divisions at the Memorial Race Weekend Showdown hosted by the Borderland Racing Association on Saturday and Sunday.
In the WISSOTA Modifieds feature on Saturday night, Strachan cruised to his division-leading fourth checkered flag of the season.
He was followed by Tyler Brown (Rainy River) and Justin Bronk (West St. Paul, Man.).
Gavin Paull and Matt DiPiero (both of the Fort) rounded the top five).
Strachan followed that win up on Sunday afternoon by finishing just back of top spot in claiming second.
Bronk nabbed the checkered flag while Brown was third.
Tyler Jonson of International Falls was fourth while Brandon Pelepetz of Emo rounded out the top five.
The successful weekend for Strachan helped him pad his lead in the points standings as he currently leads all drivers with 735.
Brown is second (685), Pelepetz sits third (620), Ron Korpi of the Fort is fourth (614), while Gary Wilson of Devlin rounds out the top five (530).
In WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds action on Saturday night, Williamson cruised to his third checkered flag of the season over Fort natives Jason Anderson and Cody Ossachuk.
Brenden Luschinski (Headingley, Man.) was fourth while Dayton Brady of Devlin rounded out the top five.
Williamson followed the win up by placing second in the feature on Sunday afternoon.
David Simpson (Thunder Bay) nabbed the checkered flag while Brandon Rehill (St. Andrews, Man.) took third.
Luschinski again was fourth while Adam Dennhardt of Thunder Bay rounded out the top five.
The pair of top-three finishes vaulted Williamson into fourth in the points standings with 619.
Defending champ Ossachuk is tops with 676, James Lambert of the Fort is second (663), and Wilson is third (641).
Keelan Hall of Kenora rounds out the top five with 502 points.
And in the Street Stocks division on Saturday night, Jake Froemke of the Falls roared to his second win of the season.
He was followed by Tanner Ulakovic (Murillo) and Raice Westover.
Defending champ Tylar Wilson of the Fort was fourth while Gary Feeleus (La Salle, Man.) rounded out the top five.
But it was Raice Westover's time to shine on Sunday afternoon as he cruised to victory over the likes of Kevin Desserre of Dryden and Jesse Thompson of Emo.
Froemke took fourth while Wilson rounded out the top five.
Raice Westover's successful weekend helped him to overtake the division's points lead with 715—15 points more than Wilson (700).
Thompson currently sits third (679), Dean Kellar of Devlin is fourth (658), while Jyllian Westover of the Fort rounds out the top five (634).
Racing resumes this Saturday, with hot laps starting at 7 p.m. and the first race going at 7:30 (weather permitting).
