Lakers stay at No. 7

The Fort Frances Lakers returned from the annual “SIJHL Showcase” last week to find their fortunes neither improved or depreciated on the national scene.

A 2-1 record was enough to keep the two-time defending SIJHL champs at No. 7 in the CJHL’s latest top 20 weekly rankings.

The Lakers (30-6-0-1) ran their league winning streak to five games while at the “Showcase,” beating the Thunder Bay North Stars 3-2 in a shootout and then the English River Miners 4-3.

Their only downfall came in a 2-0 loss to the Cochrane Crunch (NOJHL), who came into the “Showcase” ranked No. 8 but actually slipped a spot to No. 9 despite winning both their games at the event.

The reigning Dudley Hewitt Cup champion Soo Thunderbirds remain perched atop the rankings, with no changes occurring in the top five this week.

The Penticton Vees (BCHL) are ranked second, followed by the defending RBC Cup champion Portage Terriers (MJHL), the Trenton Golden Hawks (OJHL), and the Spruce Grove Saints (AJHL).

In other news, English River goalie Reid Kilburn was named the Amyotte’s Awards & Promotions player-of-the-week.

He made 41 saves in losing to the Lakers while also making 40 altogether in a 4-3 shootout win over the Minnesota Iron Rangers.

The Lakers are back in action Friday in Hoyt Lakes to face the Iron Rangers.

Then they’ll return home to take on the Miners on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Ice For Kids Arena.
