The Fort Frances Lakers came out firing and didn’t stop until they had another notch in the win column.
Dustin Deugau broke a 3-3 tie in the third period to help the Lakers edge the English River Miners in their final game at the annual “SIJHL Showcase” yesterday in Hoyt Lakes, Mn.
Deugau pinched in from the point, reeled in a pass from behind the net, and ripped a blast past Miners’ goalie Reid Kilburn for the only goal of the final frame.
The Lakers shook off a 2-0 loss to the Cochrane Crunch (NOJHL) the previous day in Virginia, Mn. to register their fifth-straight win over SIJHL opponents and finish the “Showcase” with a 2-1 mark.
Fort Frances (30-6-0-1) also increased its lead over the second-place Dryden GM Ice Dogs (24-9-2-3), who fell 4-3 in overtime to the Minnesota Iron Rangers.
SIJHL rookie scoring leader Cole Tymkin, along with Jason Wilson and A.J. Rupert, had the other Lakers’ goals yesterday.
Dylan Robertson added three assists.
Braeden Pierce and Sam Cirone scored their first SIJHL goals while Nash Dabb had the other for the Miners (9-27-1-4), who have yet to beat the Lakers this season.
Brandon Bodnar made 25 saves to earn the win.
The Lakers next head back to Hoyt Lakes on Feb. 5 to face the Iron Rangers.
Their next home game is set for the following night versus English River.
