Lakers grab series lead

Category:

Fort Frances native Ian Tookenay scored just 1:21 into overtime to lift the host Fort Frances Lakers to a 2-1 victory over the English River Miners on Saturday night in Game 3 of their best-of-five quarter-final playoff series.

The Lakers now lead the series 2-1 and have English River on the brink of elimination heading into Game 4 tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Ice For Kids Arena.

After a scoreless first period, the Miners opened the scoring 7:46 into the second on Matt O'Neill's goal.

That held up until early in the third when Jack Bernie beat Miners' goalie Michael Lenko five-hole to tie it at 2:07.

Then Tookenay's winner early in the extra frame put the Lakers a win away from advancing to the SIJHL semi-finals against the top-seeded Dryden GM Ice Dogs.

Ismael Ralsten turned aside 24 shots to earn the win while Lenko stopped 43 in taking the loss.

The Miners had evened the series at a game apiece with a 4-1 victory Thursday night at the Cochenour Arena.

Defenceman Kyle Rosolowski opened the scoring for English River in the first period when he connected on the power play with 22 seconds before intermission.

Fort Frances drew level at 4:29 of the second thanks to Adam Withers' tally.

The Miners took a 2-1 lead in the third when Ethan Wong netted the eventual game-winner at 5:20.

The Lakers pulled Ralsten in the late stages in an attempt to tie the game and force overtime, but English River got a pair of empty-net goals from Spencer Milne and Cody Milgate to ice the victory.

Lenko made 31 saves to earn the win while Ralsten stopped 27 in taking the loss.

Game 5, if necessary, will be played Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. back at the Cochenour Arena.
