The Fort Frances Lakers decided to change things up a bit over the weekend and postpone their annual tryout camp.
Although the camp was originally slated to run Friday through Sunday at Bronco Arena in International Falls, Lakers' head coach/general manager Wayne Strachan noted that most of the registrants were local players.
As such, he felt they could push the camp back and invite the out-of-town players to the main training camp in September.
“We have five skates in August for local players and potential players spaced out from Aug. 14-28,” he revealed.
“There are a couple local players that played else where in Junior leagues last year [that] we want to get a good look at in August. Give a taste to some young prospects what Junior is like and maybe have some of them in training camp as well in September.”
Strachan also noted that it has been a “typical” off-season for the team and that he expects to be busy over the next month or so heading into the next SIJHL season.
“We have signed a few more players but have not announced them as of yet, we are waiting on potential offers we have out there,” he revealed.
"We always look at options to make the team better on the trade front.
“[We] wait for potential recruits to make decisions and look to find guys we feel can come in and contribute to the team,” he added.
“One area we are keying on is defence. It has been slow in that department but we have time and are talking to several players.”
The schedule for the 2019-2020 SIJHL season should be announced over the coming weeks.
