Lakers add size to roster

Category:

The Fort Frances Lakers have added some size and versatility up front with their signing of forward Isaac Baron last week.

The Burnsville, Mn. native comes to Fort Frances after spending last season in the NA3HL with the Iowa Bulls and La Crosse Freeze.

In 22 regular-season games with the Bulls last season, the 19-year-old scored six goals and added six assists, along with compiling 45 minutes in penalties.

Baron then added two assists in eight games with the Freeze to finish the season.

He also suited up in six playoff games for the Freeze but was held off the scoresheet.

“Isaac is going to add size to our forward core,” Lakers' head coach and general manager Wayne Strachan said in a press release.

"He skates well for a big guy, and he is enthusiastic to join our program and get the year started.

“We like his physical presence," Strachan added. "He can play defence if need be, he will be a good 200-foot player, and complement our fast, skilled guys.”

In other news, the Lakers' annual tryout camp that was to run this past Friday through Sunday at the Lake of the Woods Arena in Baudette. Mn. was postponed.

Strachan said it now will run before the team's main camp slated for Aug. 31-Sept. 1, and that he anticipates more player signings as the summer progresses.

Up next, the Lakers will host the annual Bob Mainville Memorial golf tournament this Saturday (July 14) starting at 10 a.m. at Kitchen Creek.

The fee is $400 per four-person team, with up to 40 teams being accepted.

The combined team handicap must be at least 40, with only one player under a seven.

Entry includes one cart per team and a meal.

Cash prizes will be determined by the number of entries, and there also will be draw prizes and a closest-to-the-pin contest.

For more information on the tournament or to register, call the Kitchen Creek pro shop at 274-4653.

You also can sign up by contacting Strachan at 274-4383 (home), 275-7798 (cell), or via e-mail at wayne@fortfranceslakers.com
