The Fort Frances Lakers’ newest acquisition will cast a rather lengthy shadow wherever he travels on the ice.
Defenceman Ryan Gazich joined the team yesterday and possibly will be in the lineup tonight when the Lakers (1-0) host the Dryden GM Ice Dogs (2-0) in their regular-season home-opener.
Game time is 7:30 p.m. at the Ice For Kids Arena.
At 6’3” and 215 pounds, Gazich becomes not only the biggest blueliner on the Lakers’ roster, but the largest player in terms of combined height and weight on the whole team.
The 19-year-old native of Eagan, Mn. started last season with the Michigan Warriors (NAHL), where he had no points in four games.
Gazich then moved to the Richmond Generals (United States Premier Hockey League), where he notched two goals and nine assists in 27 regular-season games.
He added one goal in four playoff games.
The Ice Dogs, meanwhile, will be looking to extract some revenge tonight after being ousted in six games by the Lakers in last year’s SIJHL final.
Fort Frances also bounced Dryden from the Dudley Hewitt Cup tournament in the final round-robin game.
The Lakers then will host the Minnesota Iron Rangers (3-0) tomorrow at 7:30 p.m.
