The 50th anniversary of the original Church Curling Bonspiel is now history, with a total of 10 teams participating Saturday at the Fort Frances Curling Club.
Teams representing St. Mary's Roman Catholic, Zion Lutheran, and Knox United from Fort Frances, along with the Emo Christian Reformed Church, kicked off the Family Day weekend by curling three games in front of a supportive group of family and friends.
It was the Knox United team of hard-sweeping cousins Griffin Garuk (imported from Atikokan) and Owen Riches, along with lead Elaine Sande and skip Bill Gushulak, that prevailed at the end of the day as recipients of the championship R.V. Green Trophy.
Finishing in second place was one of the Zion Lutheran teams consisting of Bonny and Brian Mueller, along with Lynn and Wilf Belluz.
Awards sponsored by Green Funeral Home were presented to the top two teams.
Interest shown by this year's participants strongly indicated the event should continue next year, with perhaps scheduling it again on the Family Day weekend as the best plan.
Be sure to check out the Fort Frances Times for next year's registration information.
