The Lorne Jackson rink had a weekend to remember at the Region 1 Curling Club Championship held at the Fort Frances Curling Club.
The local squad, which also includes Derek Jackson (third), Mark Pedersen (second), and Ed Vold (lead), compiled a 3-0 record en route to snaring a berth at the provincials slated for April 4-7 in Thunder Bay.
Jackson opened play Friday evening with a 7-3 win over Kevin Brown (Kenora).
The squad then doubled Joshua Szajewski (Keewatin) by a 6-3 score Saturday morning before ending play that night with a narrow 8-6 defeat of Brown to book their ticket to the provincials.
Jackson scored a deuce in the eighth end to seal the win.
The rink was slated to face Szajewski again Sunday morning but the game didn’t need to be played as Jackson already had secured the best record.
On the women’s side, the Tirzah Keffer rink went 1-3 and failed to qualify for the provincials.
The local squad, which also includes Taylor Sopotiuck (fifth), Samantha Clifford (third), Carley Busch (second), and Sarah Wreggit (third), opened play Friday night with a narrow 6-5 loss to Lori Hoppe (Kenora) in extra ends.
Hoppe scored a single in the ninth end to pull out the victory.
Keffer then rebounded with an 8-5 win over Crystal Wojtowicz (Kenora) on Saturday morning before falling to Hoppe by a 7-5 final that night.
Needing a win to force tie-breakers, Keffer fell just short Sunday morning with an 8-6 loss to Wojtowicz to finish third out of the three-team field.
Wojtowicz earned the provincial berth as they topped the field with a 3-1 record.
