Jackson rink loses opener

It was a fast start but forgettable finish for Kathie Jackson.
The Fort Frances skip and her Northern Ontario rink of third Teresa McFayden, second Lisa Penner, and lead Kris Sinclair fell 7-4 last night to Stacey Fordyce of Manitoba in their opening game in the Grey Pool at The Dominion Club Curling Championship in Thunder Bay.
Northern Ontario (0-1) jumped out to a 3-0 after two ends, but then surrendered five points over the next three ends to trail by two after the fifth.
With all games only going eight ends (barring extra ends), Jackson needed to rebound quickly.
But a single in the sixth for Northern Ontario was matched by one in the seventh for the Brandon-based rink.
Manitoba (1-0) then stole one more in the eighth to seal the victory.
Northern Ontario will look to break into the win column with two games today.
They’ll take on the Paulette Girvan rink (New Brunswick) at 12:15 p.m. (CDT), then face Lauryn Jenkins (Alberta) at 7:15 p.m. (CDT).
Manitoba, Alberta, and the Yukon’s Nicole Baldwin are tied for first in the Grey Pool at 1-0.
Amy Gibson of B.C. (0-0), who plays her first games today, sits in fourth.
Monique Gagnier (Northwest Territories) join Northern Ontario and New Brunswick at the back of the pack at 0-1.
In the Blue Pool, Michelle Fletcher (Ontario), Geneva Chislett (Nunavut), and Heather Burnett (Saskatchewan) all posted opening-day victories to share first place.
Quebec’s Janet Fontaine (0-0) begins play today while Pam Osborne (Newfoundland and Labrador), Sharon Horne (P.E.I.), and Marion MacAulay (Nova Scotia) sit at 0-1.
The top two teams from each pool advance to the playoffs on Friday, with the final set for Saturday.
