The Rainy River Recreation Centre hosted its first annual ice-fishing derby on Saturday (Feb. 10), which drew 153 registered participants.
The derby featured a 50 percent payout, with the other 50 going towards youth programming at the centre.
Prizes (both cash and donated items) were given to the top four participants for walleye, northern, and the kids' division.
The event was a huge success, receiving sponsorship from 21 local businesses.
“Thank you to the rec centre for putting on the event and I'm looking forward to next year,” said Kelsey Tesarsky, the second-place winner for largest walleye.
“Thank you to the rec centre for a great event, hope to see it back every year,” echoed Crystal Jorgenson, who topped the walleye division.
“Was a fun day spent with family.”
The event had a cash canteen, with outdoor skating on the river surface (which has been created by local residents), snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing available to make it an event for the entire family.
“With such a great turnout, it makes me proud to call Rainy River my home,” said recreation director Jenna Yeo.
“I also want to thank everyone who donated, who assisted organizing and preparing for the day, and to each and every participant,” she added.
This event has shown that although Rainy River may be small in population, they do not lack heart and excitement.
