It’s unusual to lose one’s last game in a playoff round but still get to play again for a bigger prize.
But that was the case for both the Muskie girls’ and boys’ curling teams, who were stymied in their respective bids for NorWOSSA gold yesterday in Sioux Lookout.
Still, the second-place finishes were good enough to qualify the black-and-gold for the NWOSSAA championships March 2-4 in Chapleau.
The girls’ rink of skip Hailey Beaudry, third Nicole Hartlin, second Erin Tomalty, and lead Tory Beaudry lost 5-1 to host Sioux Lookout in the de facto title game after both teams entered the final draw tied for first with 2-0 records.
Meanwhile, the Muskie boys’ team of skip Reece Jones, third Chris Silver, second Kurt McGuire, and co-leads Jason Bazylewski and Davis Jackson were beaten 7-5 by Red Lake in a meeting of 3-0 teams that secured NorWOSSA gold for the Rams.
The Muskie mixed team of skip Matthew Grant, third Anika Beaudry, co-seconds Matthew Nowak and Dawson Mihichuk, and lead Cassidy Jolicoeur was the only team to grab a victory in their final outing yesterday, downing Whitefish Bay 8-5 to wind up in third place.
There is no mixed division at the NWOSSAA level.
The NWOSSAA girls’ champion will advance to OFSAA on March 19-22 in Brampton while the boys’ champ will qualify for the provincials in North Bay those same four days.
