Bladed Rebels nab silver medal at home tourney

Category:

The Lake of the Woods Envy scored three times in the second period en route to a 4-1 win over the Fort Frances Bladed Rebels in the Midget division's Gold-Medal Game of the Fort Frances Girls'/Women's Hockey Association's annual PeeWee and Midget tournament on Sunday afternoon at the Ice For Kids Arena.

Things started off well for the Bladed Rebels as MaKenna Hill buried the rebound of Piper Miller's shot in the high slot with 5:14 to go in the first period to open up scoring.

That success was short-lived for the hosts, however, as the Envy came right back on the next shift and got the equalizer off the stick of Paige Bechard.

Shai VanWalleghem then put the visitors ahead for good as her shot from the sideboards eluded Bladed Rebels' goalie Sydney Mondor just 1:20 into the second.

Rebecca Machura made it a two-goal game with 5:41 to go in the frame as she broke in all alone on the Fort Frances goal and made no mistake with a shot upstairs.

Then with just under a minute remaining, Natalina Reynard took a pass through the crease from linemate Mackenzie Turner and buried a backhander from in close past Mondor to round out the scoring.

Despite both teams having chances in the third, neither team could capitalize further as the Bladed Rebels settled for a hard-fought silver medal.

The Bladed Rebels opened Pool One play on Friday afternoon with a scoreless tie against the Dryden Knights.

Fort Frances then followed that up with a 7-3 win over the Nipigon Elks on Saturday morning.

Piper MIller netted a hat trick to pace the Bladed Rebels' offence while Haleigh DeGagne also scored twice.

Elizabeth Cousineau and Abby Roach provided the other goals for the Bladed Rebels.

The squad then rolled to a 4-1 win over the Lake of the Woods Mint that afternoon to finish Pool One play in first place and a berth into Sunday's championship game with a 2-0-1 record.

Miller, Julia Guertin, Jorja Pope and DeGagne all lit the lamp in that one.

In PeeWee division play, meanwhile, the Fort Frances Firecrackers compiled a 1-3 record to finish fifth out of seven teams.

The Firecrackers opened play on Friday morning with a 3-0 shutout of the Emo Express.

Davilyn Miller scored twice while Jersey Rose also found the back of the net.

But the squad's success didn't last as they dropped their remaining three games.

The K-Town Flames handed them a 5-3 loss that evening.

Shaylynn Whitecrow, Rose and Kodi-Jo Galbraith all tallied in that one.

Then on Saturday morning, the Firecrackers were dealt a 3-0 loss by the Lake of the Woods Thunderbirds.

Fort Frances put in a better effort in their final game that afternoon, but was on the wrong end of a 2-1 loss to the Dryden Red Bulls.

Rose scored the Firecrackers' lone goal in the third period.

As for the Express, they compiled an 0-4 record to finish last out of the seven teams.

After the opening loss to the Firecrackers, they also fell by a 1-0 count to the Red Bulls on Friday afternoon.

Then on Saturday morning, the Express fell 4-1 to the St. James-Assinibione Rockets White before ending tourney play that afternoon with a 7-0 loss to the Lake of the Woods Crushers.

Up next, the Fort Frances Minor Hockey Association will host its Novice Jamboree on Friday.
